Finding employment after a long time out of the workforce can be a major challenge, even if a person has work experience and educational credentials.
Cherie came to Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (RMCEP) after being out of work for four years. Cherie held an Associate of Arts degree and while motivated to return to work, she knew she wanted to move in a new career direction that better aligned with her education, interests, and long-term goal of securing full-time employment that would allow her to retire when she got older.
Despite her experience and education, she experienced some difficulty finding suitable employment. Cherie was determined to find work that felt meaningful and sustainable but needed support navigating the job search process and overcoming the barriers that had kept her from finding employment.
RMCEP provided comprehensive, client-focused services to support Cherie’s transition into new employment opportunities. Her job counselor worked closely with her to develop a professional resume and cover letter that showcased her education and experience.
RMCEP also provided supportive services, including interview clothing, shoes, car insurance assistance, gas support, and vehicle maintenance such as oil changes, ensuring Cherie could reliably attend interviews and pursue job opportunities. To further build her skills and confidence, Cherie participated in a Transitional Job Activity working at the front desk of RMCEP’s Bemidji office, where she gained hands-on experience answering phones, transferring calls, greeting customers, and filing documents.
Through RMCEP’s career exploration tools, Cherie completed an Interest Profiler, which revealed strong interests in realistic, investigative, and artistic career areas. This insight helped guide her job search toward opportunities better suited to her strengths. As a result of her participation in RMCEP, Cherie successfully secured part-time employment with two employers: a local greenhouse and a retail liquor store. Both positions align closely with her interests, offering hands-on work, analytical problem-solving, and opportunities for creativity. They provide a path to full-time employment down the road.
Cherie’s progress reflects meaningful employment outcomes made possible through personalized support and career-aligned job placement. Reflecting on her experience, Cherie shared, “Never underestimate the support you can receive within your community for success and moving forward through difficult times!”
