Air Force Veteran Jerry had been out of the military for over 20 years. During that time, he held a wide variety of IT positions in government and the private sector. “It was a bumpy ride at times. I was looking for the stability of being in (the military), and having stability was an ongoing struggle. I was still seeking permanent employment,” said Jerry.
That's when Jerry turned to Rebecca Kaas, a Veterans Employment Representative in early January of 2026. She stepped in with personalized support, teaching Jerry how to target his resume and prepare for interviews. Still, Jerry became frustrated at being passed over by potential employers. “Rebecca kept telling me that I was doing everything right and to stick with it”. Within three months, Jerry began to see real progress.
In mid-April, a recruiter contacted Jerry about an IT Project Manager job. The Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were moving forward with plans to reopen the Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Minnesota. This 1,600‑bed private prison, owned by CoreCivic, had been closed since 2010. The company now needed to restart operations and get the facility fully running again.
Jerry applied for the position and was interviewed by Conexess Group, a staffing and consulting company contracted by CoreCivic, about three weeks later.
Jerry was offered the job about a month later. He started his new role on May 26 with a competitive salary and a full benefits package. When asked how he felt about landing the position, Jerry said, “Incredibly fortunate. Finally, some recognition for the experience and leadership I've acquired over the years and being compensated adequately for it.”
His advice to fellow Veterans: “Get in touch with your area Vet Rep and stick to it!”
