Lori came to Leading CareerForce Partner Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (RMCEP) after a recent mass layoff that ended her 32-year tenure with the same employer. Lori was suddenly faced with the uncertainty of unemployment after decades of stable work. The transition was both financially and emotionally challenging, as she had not previously needed to navigate today’s job market. Thankfully the Dislocated Worker Program is designed to help workers like Lori prepare for and find suitable new employment as quickly as possible.
One of Lori’s greatest challenges was starting over professionally. Having worked at the same job for more than three decades, she had never created a resume or cover letter and was unsure how to begin a job search. The process of identifying new employment opportunities felt overwhelming, especially while coping with the psychological impact of job loss and the pressure to find meaningful, sustainable work.
Throughout her Dislocated Worker enrollment with RMCEP, Lori received individualized, client-focused support designed to address both her immediate barriers and long-term employment goals. RMCEP provided supportive services, including assistance with car repairs, insurance and utility expenses, ensuring Lori could reliably attend interviews and actively participate in her job search. She utilized RMCEP’s career lab to develop resumes and cover letters and worked one-on-one with staff to strengthen her job readiness skills. Lori also completed an Interest Profiler, which helped her gain insight into her strengths and interests and guided her toward career opportunities aligned with her abilities and desire to help others.
As a result of RMCEP’s support, Lori successfully secured employment earlier this year in a position that offered a higher hourly wage than her previous job. She now works for a transportation company where she transports clients to a methadone clinic in our region. In her new role, she finds satisfaction in meaningful work that allows her to support individuals in need while earning a better income. Lori’s outcome reflects both her determination and the effectiveness of RMCEP’s comprehensive, participant-centered approach to workforce development.
Reflecting on her experience, Lori shared, “RMCEP made the transition so much better. Losing my job was a huge shock and had a big psychological impact. It was a comfort knowing RMCEP was there to help me.”
