The health care and social assistance industry employs people who provide care for others, including Personal Care Aides, Physical Therapists, Nursing Assistants, Childcare Workers, Physicians and many other roles sometimes referred to as the caring professions. Nearly 557,000 people work in health care and social assistance in Minnesota, making it the largest employing industry in the state, accounting for nearly one in every five jobs in 2024.
Average annual wages were just under $69,000 in 2025, which was about $8,000 below the average across all industries, however wages vary widely by job in this field. There are a range of jobs in this field from entry level, which can often be started with a high school diploma or less and employer-provided training up to very highly paid positions that require many years of postsecondary education.
People with skills and experience in this field are in high demand now and are projected to remain in high demand for the foreseeable future. In fact, there were more than 31,000 job vacancies in this industry in 2024, as employers struggled to find workers to fill open jobs. According to DEED’s long-term projections, the health care and social assistance industry is expected to add nearly 58,000 new jobs over the next decade, in addition to hundreds of thousands of openings when people retire or leave this field.

Health Care and Social Assistance Industry Trends
- In 2025, there were 556,992 jobs in the health care and social assistance industry, making it the largest employing industry in the state. That accounted for about 18.9% of total employment in the state, or nearly than one in every five jobs.
- The health care and social assistance industry has added more new jobs than any other industry since 2015, gaining over 94,000 jobs between 2015 and 2025 in Minnesota, or about 55.8% of total job growth in the state over the decade.
- According to DEED’s long-term projections, the health care and social assistance industry is expected to add more than 57,800 jobs by 2034, that’s 11.1% growth (compared to 3.0% overall).
- When replacement openings are factored in, there are projected to be more than 500,000 job openings for new jobs plus job openings related to retirements or people leaving the field in health care positions alone through 2034.
