Claire was one of 47 students who participated in a Scrubs Camp last month at Bethel University in Arden Hills. Scrubs Camps are designed to give people a high-level look at a variety of health care fields to help them explore career options. Most Scrubs Camps, like the one in June at Bethel University, are intended for high school-age students. There are also camps for middle school-age students. The Minnesota State HealthForce Center of Excellence works with Bethel and 15 other colleges and universities across Minnesota to offer Scrubs Camps. More than 650 middle and high school students registered to attend Scrubs Camps this summer. Claire, who is 16 years old and considering a career as a nurse, says she learned a lot through her experience at Scrubs Camp. Here’s her story in her own words:
“My experience at Scrubs Camp provided by Bethel University was super informative. Through many hands-on learning experiences and personal testimonies from individuals in the health care field, I was able to further understand I want my future career to be. I learned how to intubate someone and provided basic care. There were many hands-on opportunities where I was able to practice flushing an IV, cleaning wounds and placing splints. There were professionals from all areas of the medical field as well as students who detailed their education tracks and shared their personal experiences in earning their prospective degrees. We also dove into areas in and out of the healthcare field that we maybe didn't think about immediately when considering pursuing healthcare. One such example was our session on Veterinary Medicine, where we learned all about how to care for animals and properly examine them. Throughout my three days at Bethel University, I really began to understand the inner workings of the very expansive field of health care. By enrolling in this camp and experiencing all these new things, I discovered more clearly what it is I want to do when I'm older, and began to more clearly see my place in the health care field.”
