Laura came to CareerForce after an unexpected layoff and found the help she needed to move forward and find fulfilling employment. Here’s Laura’s story in her own words:
“After 23 years of steady employment, losing my job was something I never expected. In the fall, I was laid off due to downsizing after two years with my employer. At first, it felt like failure. But as I began searching for a new position, I quickly realized I wasn't alone—the job market was challenging, and I was going to need help.
“On paper, my career told a story of success: more than 20 years with a single Fortune 500 company, incredible opportunities, and steady professional growth. Yet I had reached a point where I wanted to apply my experience in a new industry. It was a safe career, but I wasn't truly fulfilled. I chose to take a risk and pursue a new opportunity outside the industry I had always known. Although that decision didn't work out as I had hoped, losing my job became an unexpected opportunity to reflect on my strengths, redefine my career goals, and explore what was next.
“As part of the unemployment program, I connected with Angela Myss (CareerForce Workforce Development Representative in Burnsville), who introduced me to the many resources available through CareerForce. She took the time to understand my goals and explained the support available, including virtual job clubs, resume writing services, career coaching, job search assistance, and continuing education opportunities. Looking back, I realize I shouldn't have been so shy—or ashamed—to ask for help. The door was already open. I simply needed the courage to walk through it.
“In January, I began attending the weekly virtual Job Club led by Jason Pangiarella from the Thief River Falls office. I quickly found myself connecting with people from across Minnesota who were all at different stages of their reemployment journey. Hearing their experiences reminded me that I wasn't alone, and every session gave me new ideas and renewed motivation. Through Job Club, I also discovered additional CareerForce workshops, including an online resume writing class that became another important step in my journey.
“By February, I was fully committed to both my job search and my own professional growth. I enrolled in the Employment & Training program and was fortunate to work with Virginia Becker in the Burnsville office. Together, we explored continuing education opportunities, and I was accepted into Cornell University's six-month Women in Product Management certificate program. The program strengthened both my leadership and product management skills while giving me renewed confidence in what I could offer future employers.
“One CareerForce resource that made a lasting impact was the resume writing workshop. After attending the class, I scheduled a one-on-one virtual session with Amber Kropp from the Brainerd office. Amber helped me rethink how I presented my experience, accomplishments, and value to employers. It wasn't simply about improving my resume—it was about helping me see my own experience differently. That confidence made all the difference.
“Shortly after updating my resume, I began receiving interview requests.
“CareerForce provided much more than job search resources. Throughout my journey, I received career coaching, resume assistance, interview preparation, professional development opportunities, and continuous encouragement. Every interaction helped rebuild my confidence and reminded me that my experience still had tremendous value.
“Today, I am self-employed and working with a non-profit where I am responsible for developing business strategy and creating the vision and processes to support the organization's future growth. The role allows me to combine everything I learned throughout my career with new perspectives and skills I gained during this transition. It has provided financial stability for my family while giving me exciting opportunities to continue learning, growing, and making an impact.
“Looking back, CareerForce changed much more than my employment status. It reminded me to believe in myself and showed me that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. I discovered resources I never knew existed, built new skills, expanded my professional network, and found a career opportunity that truly aligns with my experience and aspirations.
“Before this experience, I assumed CareerForce was only for people who were unemployed. What I learned is that its resources are available to anyone looking to grow professionally. Being willing to ask for help and take advantage of the expertise available through CareerForce made a meaningful difference in my life.
“I am incredibly grateful to Angela, Jason, Virginia, and Amber for their guidance, encouragement, and belief in me. Their support helped me navigate one of the most challenging periods of my career, and because of them, I am excited about what comes next.”
