Justin has always been someone who takes pride in his work and in providing for his family. As a husband and father of five, he understands the importance of steady employment and long‑term stability. When the nonprofit organization he worked for closed and he was laid off from his non‑CDL driving position, the change brought some uncertainty, but it didn’t shake his determination to move forward.

With over 19 years of experience in construction, driving and general labor, Justin knew he had the skills and work ethic to succeed. He also knew that earning his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) would open the door to stronger opportunities. While the cost of training was a barrier following his layoff, Justin remained focused, motivated and committed to getting back to work in a role that better supported his growing family.

Through Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (RMCEP) and the Growing Careers program through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), Justin found the support he needed to take that next step. Growing Careers provided funding for him to earn his CDL Class A through Central MN Truck Academy in Royalton, Minnesota. In addition, supportive services helped with gas and required clothing and supplies, making it easier for Justin to stay focused on training and transitioning into his new career.

Thanks to his background and familiarity with hands‑on, physically demanding work, Justin completed his CDL training quickly. Shortly after, he began working as a CDL truck driver in a role that allows him to put his skills to use while supporting Minnesota’s agricultural industry through feed delivery. He will also be hauling asphalt oil in the off season and supporting road infrastructure improvements, which agriculture depends on heavily.

CDL drivers are in high demand in Northwest Minnesota and are expected to remain in high demand for the coming decade. They are in the top 10 highest demand of all occupations in the region and also boast the second highest wage of any top 10 demand occupation in the Northwest Region, second only to registered nurses.

Today, Justin is back on the road in a career he feels confident about – one that offers stability, purpose, and room for growth. What could have been a difficult pause became an opportunity for advancement, thanks to Justin’s drive and the timely support from Leading CareerForce Partner RMCEP and DEED’s Growing Careers program. His story reflects how motivation, experience, and the right resources can come together to create positive momentum for both workers and their families.
