On November 7, 2024, 36-year-old U.S. Air Force Veteran Peter was transferred to Rebecca Kaas, DVOP, after completing the VA’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment program. He had recently earned a master’s degree in Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering from the University of Minnesota in June 2024 and was eager to transition into a civilian career where he could apply both his academic achievements and military experience.

Initially, Peter was optimistic about his prospects. However, after several months of job searching, it became clear that opportunities in his specialized field were limited. Despite his strong qualifications, he struggled to gain traction in the job market.

That’s when he began working more closely with Rebecca, receiving individualized support and guidance. Through weekly check-ins, resume reviews, and job search strategy sessions, Peter began to see real progress. He later shared, “So much of the advice I received was helpful. The weekly check-ins often included suggestions that helped me in my job search. I started to get more responses from job postings after we worked on the resume review.”

On March 18, 2025, Lee Okerstrom, LVER, identified a unique opportunity—a federal position as a Cyber Operations Officer with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The job, which was not publicly posted, had the potential for direct hire. Recognizing Peter’s transferable skills and potential, Lee promptly shared the opportunity via email.

Peter applied the very next day, on March 19. Nearly six months later, his persistence and preparation paid off—he was officially offered the position. Peter accepted and began his new role on October 6, 2025, starting at the GS-12 level, with a scheduled promotion to GS-13 after one year.

This success story is a testament to the power of personalized support, interagency collaboration, and the determination of our Veterans. It also highlights the critical role DVOPs and LVERs play in helping Veterans uncover hidden opportunities and achieve meaningful employment.
