Mike wrote Jeff Dexter in CareerForce Veterans Employment Services to say thank you for Jeff's help in finding employment that drew on Mike's skills and experience and helped him find fulfillment in serving fellow veterans. Here's Mike's message of gratitude, in his own words:
"After retiring for the second time—first from a 21-year active duty career in the U.S. Air Force and then from two decades in the airline industry—I found myself searching for a new purpose. At age 59, I was eager to give back, especially to fellow veterans. But stepping back into the job market after so long was daunting. I had no recent job-hunting experience, and despite my extensive background, I received dozens of rejections.
"Fortunately, my County Veterans Service Officer in Washington County recommended I reach out to CareerForce. That was the turning point.
"Through CareerForce, I was connected with Jeff Dexter, who offered not only clear, step-by-step guidance, but also genuine encouragement. Jeff helped me evaluate my transferable skills using O*Net and showed me how to better target my job search. As I began applying to jobs, Jeff kept in close contact and introduced me to Lee Okerstrom. Lee personally followed up with potential employers on my behalf and provided strong references, giving me a level of support I hadn’t expected.
"They also encouraged me to explore the VA’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) program. Thanks to their advice, I was approved—and will begin a graduate program in Human Resources at Arizona State University this fall.
"Best of all, I’ve recently accepted a position with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. I’m now working in a role that allows me to support fellow veterans every day—something I’m truly passionate about."
CareerForce helped me turn frustration into a fulfilling new mission. I’m living proof that it’s never too late to start a new chapter. - Mike
