On September 2, 2025, Rebecca Kaas, a Minnesota Veterans Employment Representative, enrolled Angela, a 60-year-old U.S. Army Veteran, into the Minnesota Veterans Employment Program. Angela came with an impressive background: a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s in organizational management with an emphasis in human resources, over 30 years of leadership experience, and more than 13 years in human resources. Despite her qualifications, Angela faced a significant internal barrier—her age.

Angela feared that hiring managers might overlook her in favor of younger, less experienced candidates. “I was afraid they’d see me as too old,” she shared. But with Rebecca’s guidance, that fear began to fade.

Rebecca provided comprehensive, personalized support throughout Angela’s job search. More than just offering services, she became a source of encouragement and strength. Angela reflected,

“Sometimes it is just being there, being available and providing a supportive voice and being my cheerleader, which helped immensely with gaining back confidence to get back into the interviewing role.”

One of the pivotal services Rebecca offered was referrals. She connected Angela with Pam Muehlbauer at CareerForce in Blaine for a mock interview, helping her prepare for a real opportunity: a Vice President of People and Culture position at Normandale Community College.

Angela applied for the position just two weeks after enrolling in the program. Exactly eight weeks later, she received and accepted a job offer. On November 5, 2025, she began her new leadership role with a strong compensation package.

Angela credits Rebecca as a key part of her success:

“Rebecca was always there, encouraging me in my over '60' status and looking for employment in this new era. She was open and honest; showed her own vulnerability in sharing personal challenges that she had overcome. Rebecca always acknowledged, ‘yes this is where we are’, but it is nothing that will keep me down and I will be able to overcome. She helped me remove my internal barriers.”
